Would you buy a kid a horror?

The other day I went into HMV and saw something that put me aback it had appeared that the documentary Video Nasties:A Definitive Guide had somehow had a sequel not exploring how those infamous 72 films were intially banned but instead following on with what was known as the draconian days which ended in 1999 when the BBFC were trying to use propaganda to make more films banned in the UK such as popular ones like Friday The 13th,The New York Ripper and Child's Play 3 which James Ferman tried to blame for the terrible death of James Bulger. Sorry went a bit off track for a moment but the point is that documentary though in the price range of what money I had in my wallet it was an 18 which I a 15 year old couldn't buy because I struggle with 15 because of what my friends call my baby face. I was faced with a choice should I accept, admit defeat but then through the little hamsters running the wheels in my mind devised a plan which was that I needed someone older to go to the till. A man standing with his mate looking at games so I walked over and said Excuse me you seem over 18 he smiled and looked to his friend awkwardly well I was wondering if you could go up to the till and use this £20 there's a fiver change inti for you so he did it and got my documentry. This has got me thinking fellow deadites if a kid with a 18 walked up and offered to pay and everything would you do it?

I used to do this myself when I was about 15  :laughing ... I hate myself a little bit for saying this but I'm not sure I would. It would depend on how young the kid looked, how nervous he/she was, had they already tried to take it to the counter to pay etc etc .. I'd have given you your fiver back as well  :wink

Me and my best mate were about 15 when we went to the opening night for Evil Dead 2. I was cheekier than him so was always the delegated bull shitter when it came to lying our way into 18 films. At the last second, my mate declared that he was doing the deed and switched places with me in the line.
"Are you 18?" said the ticket woman
"Umm .. we're 17" said my mate
.... so we were denied entry and had to settle for watching The Gate instead (not a bad film as it turned out). I'm 41 now and I still haven't forgiven him for screwing up opening night of ED2  :angryfist

So if a 15 year old handed me a fantasy horror or gore film and I thought I could get away with it then probably yes. If the film had a lot of nudity or a strong sexual theme then I wouldn't.

I think it would be hard to find any horror film fan that didn't start watching horror films underage. Think about the classic kid's bed time stories, Little Red Riding Hood was a total werewolf rif, Hansel and Gretel .... two kids abducted by a cannibal after being lured there by sweets .... most of those fairy tales were pretty strong stuff! .... the trees attacking Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, an old hag witch ... Evil Dead anyone? ..

It would depend on the kid's tolerance for gore.  I remember Bruce's quote about Evil Dead: "My kids can see it when they're old enough to drive themselves to the video store."  I can see that holding for me as a parent, at least for r-rated fare (that is, if rental stores still exist when I have children )

Yeah I agree with that but I got into horror a lot younger and my parents were fine but they said don't watch what  scares me and don't think its real because real life = real consequences which I think if my kids were to get into horror I would teach them.

When I was a kid my friends mom signed a not at the local video store (remember those?) saying he could rent any type of flick except porno. I must say that had it not been for that I never would have seen any Evil Dead 2, A Clockwork Orange... or any other good movies. Trying to find someone old enough to buy one reminds me of the old days of standing outside the store trying to convince someone old enough to buy a pack of cigarettes. I did that often. Thankfully, I quit 3 1/2 years ago after 14 years of smoking. Movies are much healthier for you, and your wallet.

:bigsmile ... Yeah I remember ... I remember the first video store I ever went into like it was yesterday ... Be My Bloody Valentine, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, all those The Last Snow Of Spring "chick flicks" cassettes all proudly displayed and the Betamax wall close to the owner's serving counter. And we had to pay £20 a month just to be a member and even be allowed to rent which was a fortune in the early 80's! ... that's still extortionate today! .... and my Mum renting an under the counter bootleg copy of E.T. which was the first pirate copy of any film I ever saw ..
